Following the success of their New Zealand seminars in 2008, experienced teachers and facilitators Catherine Syms and Deborah Stevens will offer Professional Development seminars on Teaching Values Across the Curriculum – facilitated by DAN – in Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne on 23-27 March 2009.
The 2005 Australian National Framework acknowledges that schools must be concerned with more than educating students in terms of ‘outcomes’ to take their place in society, to get a good job and to be economically successful. The education curriculum has a wider remit of educating young people to fulfil their potential.
Values Education is a compulsory component of the 2005 Australian National Framework:

Scope of Teaching Values Seminar:
- The Social Challenges of Gen Y – What are we up against
- Contemporary Values Education: the Australian Framework & International Trends
- How Values Educaiton can be integrated into all subject areas
- Making it work in the classroom – trialed and tested subject material and innovative
cross-curricular methodologies (with a focus on Years 6-10)
Catherine Syms & Deborah Stevens have extensive backgrounds in the diverse and rapidly evolving area of Values Education.
Catherine Syms has over 10 years teaching experience in Values Education in the United Kingdom and New Zealand. She has participated in United Kingdom national working parties on Humanities and Health curriculum development, focusing on core values and differentiation.
Deborah Stevens is a scientist, teacher and educational consultant in the discipline of Bioethics. She is the author and facilitator of New Zealand’s first dedicated bioethics curriculum at secondary level, and a frequent visitor to Australia as a conference presenter and facilitator of student and professional development seminars for teachers.
