| TEACHING SILENCE AND STILLNESS These meditations are intended to compliment a broad based academic approach to values education called the 5 Strand Approach. Stillness and Silence can give an alternative perspective to materialism and help students to gain inner confidence and to recognise the value of silence, gentleness, compassion, concern for others and personal responsibility. These recordings and associated web resources should provide teachers with some helpful ideas to use with their classes. ‘RELAXATION AND VISUALISATIONS’ 1. A Breathing Exercise. 2. The Garden - This meditation enables students to deal with fears or anxieties. 3. The Beach -This meditation is useful for students worrying about things from home or at school. It is also useful for students to deal with issues such as a lack of self-confidence or self-discipline. 4. Preparing for Learning - This meditation allows students some space to work on their goals and encourages them to achieve their goals. 5. Overcoming Obstacles - Difficult situations arise in student’s lives from time to time and this meditation is designed to help students overcome these obstacles. ‘DEVELOPING FAITH AND ASSURANCE’ 6. Is there a Natural Law? c. Proportionalism The VIDEO clips can be played from within Microsoft’s programme using either WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER or REAL PLAYER. There are three video clips: 1. A short introduction to ETHICAL THEORIES by Peter Vardy (this is about 25 minutes long). This covers the most basic essentials of Utilitarianism, Natural Law, Virtue Ethics and Situation Ethics. However this is a really simple introduction and needs to be supplemented with the Powerpoint presentations and the notes. 2. Two interviews with Bp. William of Stockholm, Sweden on Just War and Globalisation. Bp. William knows Iraq very well and was the former European head of CARITAS. He is a good example of the Church engaged with the complexities of the modern world. |

With Professor Ann Mortimer, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Hull. Ann Mortimer talks of the possibility of a source of evil independent of the human psyche – perhaps an unusual position for a front rank psychiatrist to argue for today. |
