| TEACHING THE BIBLE IN SCHOOLS from Dialogue Australasia. The disk contains Powerpoint presentations, general and extensive notes on the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures and the content of the book "The Puzzle of the Gospels". This CD are prepared by Dr. Peter Vardy, Vice-Principal of Heythrop College, University of London and Julie Arliss of Richard Huish College, Taunton, England. All these notes are intended for use with young people in school. They are therefore intended to be accessible and cannot be comprehensive as in all these areas there is far more to be said. The study of the scriptures is a life time task but a sound introduction to young people is essential if they are to understand their depth, significance and contemporary relevance. Hopefully, however, these notes and POWERPOINTS will provide an academically sound introduction to the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. This CD is arranged in various folders: GENERAL NOTES ON HEBREW SCRIPTURES These include some notes on the Hebrew scriptures and background that are not found under other headings. They are accessible through Microsoft WORD™ or other word processing programmes that can access WORD™ documents. NOTES WITH HEBREW STORIES These are notes on the following stories which look at their background. These are, possibily, the most important stories from the Hebrew scriptures with which all young people should be expected to be familiar. They underpin European culture, art and literature apart from their religious significance to Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Creation and Flood Abraham Joseph Moses Elijah Ruth Saul and David Daniel Jonah NOTES FOR N.T. STUDIES These include general notes with can be read using Microsoft WORD ™ or compatible word processing programmes. THE PUZZLE OF THE GOSPELS This book, published by Harper Collins and written by Peter Vardy and Mary Mills, is intended to make the study of the Gospels accessible and to bring out the main issues in contemporary Biblical Studies. Most of the chapters in this book are included under this folder. POWERPOINTS FOR HEBREW SCRIPTURES These are POWERPOINT ™ presentations which can be displayed using a data projector and MICROSOFT ™ POWERPOINT programme. Most of them are under the sub folder entitled "PWRPTS FOR VIDEOS ON HEBREW STORIES". These are specifically intended for use with the TESTAMENT series of videos and are intended to be run at the same time as the videos. These videos represent a wonderful resource for teachers - they are sensitive, sound, clear and communicate the depth of the stories. These Powerpoints have been timed to run so that slides change in line with the video BUT the timings may be affected by computer processor speed so teachers should ensure that, with their computers, the timings are appropriate. It may be necessary for teachers to advance the slides manually if the computer processor speeds of different computers do not ensure that the slides advance in time with the videos. One suggestion is to show the video to young people first by itself and then to show it again but with the POWERPOINT presentations running side by side through a data projector. If the slide show is started as soon as the flaming logo appears on the screen at the beginning of the video, the timings should be accurate. The POWERPOINT presentations provide background detail and explanations for the TESTAMENT videos. POWERPOINTS FOR NEW TESTAMENT These are POWERPOINTS ™ presentations dealing with central aspects of the New Testament - particularly the Gospels. Topics covered include: Introduction to Biblical Studies The New Testament canon Vocabulary in the Gospels Gospel sources Form Source and Redaction criticism Infancy narratives (birth stories) Passion narratives Narnia, Christianity and salvation by (Dr. Felicity McCutcheon, Canberra Girls Grammar Schools) Parables Sermon on the mount The Council of Jerusalem The Kingdom of God Comments from Archbishop George Carey Also included is a Powerpoint presentation on the film THE MATRIX. This can be used with young people in conjunction with the article in DIALOGUE AUSTRALIA on the film showing the links with the Gospel of John. Produced by Wombat Education Ltd.
